Using Google Voice for transcribed voice memos
I used to use Jott for recording voice memos when out and about, driving, etc. The Voice Memo app released with iPhone OS 3.0 is pretty slick, but I don’t use it because it’s too easy to forget to go back into the app and listen to the recordings (and emailing them can’t be automated). This Google Voice setup is really nice since it will email you the transcribed recording...

WatchWatch
Interesting mobile UI concept with a Vimeo-esque aesthetic. I would like to have seen a morning-after beer goggles feature, though - perhaps a quick delete or avatar edit for the lady he input after getting his drink on.

Firefox 3.7 & 4.0 UI Concepts →
I think they’re going off the deep end with the visual clutter (esp. with the 4.0 concepts), but I love this discussion happening out in the open and respect the folks devoting their time to the cause.

Nice collection of iPhone-optimized web designs. (which would, of course, work for other WebKit-based mobile browsers)

Balsamiq Mockups Review
(Full disclosure: I received a free license for this software in exchange for writing a review. The cost of a single desktop version license is $79, but there are several ways you might get a complimentary license: ie. writing a blog review like this, demoing the software in front of a group, participating in a non-profit or open source organization, etc.) I can’t remember the first...

The Difference Between Art and Design →
Reading through this article, I’m not sure I agree with much of anything the author says. I felt that his statements could be applied to either side. For me, art (literature, film, dance, music, painting, etc.) is something that is meant to evoke emotion. Design solves a problem. Great design solves the problem while evoking emotion. What do you think?

WatchWatch
I guess I always know which app I’m dragging a file to, but in general this concept makes pretty good sense.

Small coding gig
I’ve got a client who needs a simple SOAP web service built and I don’t have the bandwidth right now. The service just needs to listen for connections, collect some info, and pass it along (probably email) to the staff. Programming language doesn’t matter. Drop me a line if you want more info.

“Hey, good job on making it look like it’s not Rails, if you know what I...”
– Anonymous Flickr engineer on the overuse of the “The Cult of Basecamp” design aesthetic. Seems like it should be nonsense, but you know get it (and as a longtime 37signals fan, I’m not completely innocent). Check out the rest of the ReadWriteStart article about The Aesthetics of...

Zappos, the online shoe shopping utopia →
Great New Yorker on Zappos. I’ve become a huge fan of them over the past couple of years. Insanely fast (free, both ways) shipping and legendary customer support. I watched Tony Hsieh’s talk at the Business Innovation Factory a while back where he talked about their internal “Culture Book” that the employees write. He said he’d give one to anyone for free. I...

Hypocrites
So after eight years of patriotism rhetoric, these same people tell us we shouldn’t listen to our own president talk about staying in school and working hard? Sorry folks, I try to keep my political views to myself here, but this is embarrassing.
