“What makes Japanese design so special? Basically, it’s a matter of simplicity; a particular notion of simplicity, different from what simplicity means in the West. So are things in general better designed in Japan? Well, actually, it’s not that simple…”

Wilson Miner - Design & Build on Vimeo (via Vimeo)
The most interesting quote about generalisation vs specialisation in terms of the web – the code is the object – you must balance the process of design and build due to their close relationship. The process does not end in a stage gate process find the fulcrum of the design and development. (around 15-17 mins)

Followup to using Closure with Rails
A couple of weeks ago I asked if anyone had any advice on how to incorporate Google’s Closure compiler into a Rails workflow. I didn’t receive any responses, but many others apparently had the same question because that post was receiving many hits from “google closure rails” type search queries.
Anyhoo, the folks at ZURB have built a plugin that looks promising. In a...

Google Closure in Rails Development Workflow?
Update: I found a promising Rails plugin for this.
I’ve got a couple of projects that I’d be interested in trying out the recently released Closure Tools on. Have any workflow best practices started to surface yet in regards to compiling your app’s Javascript with these tools? The compiler UI is slick in that you can see the results of the compiled code, but I’m...

Intentional Complexity?
Why are remotes for cable boxes so cluttered and complicated? Is it so that they amp up the cognitive load for users in hopes that they will be too lazy to learn how to expertly skip commercials, as the author of this post suggests? I don’t buy that since cable companies don’t have any incentive to control how customers view their content.
They do, however, have incentive to...
