Using SQLite in Processing
I know I’ve piqued an interest in Processing for a couple of you, so this tip may come in handy. You can use SQLite for your database needs and access it via a drop-in JDBC library. I found this entry on Tom Carden’s (of Stamen) blog and I finally got it working in my sketch. The gotcha (which I’m recording here partially for my own future reference) is that you need to use...

New Site Launch - Dyenomite Tie Dyes
Another site that I’ve been working on for a while has launched recently. This one is for a company called Dyenomite Tie Dyes and, as the name implies, they manufacture all sorts of tie dye garments for customers large and small. Dyenomite’s designer, Andy Johnson, created the overall design to match that of their print catalog. I took it from there and built the backend including...

If you build ExpressionEngine sites with Coda, you probably already know about this trick, but if not - it’s a gem.

New Site Launch - PhotoEats.com
I’ve made a couple of posts recently about a new site I’ve been working on and it has now been out in the wild for a week or two. My client decided to combine two of his passions, food and photography, into an online community of sorts. The result is PhotoEats.com. One of the features I am most excited about is the search tool. I really like the live search-type search that Apple...

Inside the Expression Engine Site Redesign
As I’ve mentioned before, I love a good behind-the-scenes piece. I just came across this article on Digital Web by Jesse Bennett-Chamberlain describing the process he followed while working on the (very nice) Expression Engine site redesign last year.

Nextcity: The Art of the Possible
Sometimes I wish I could teleport to the city that never sleeps. The New Museum will be featuring one of my favorite studios, Stamen Design, as part of their Nextcity exhibition.

Free to a Good Mac
I picked up a MacHeist bundle last week, but I don’t have a need for all of the apps. If you’re interested in any of the following, leave a comment and I’ll get in touch later today with the license information. If there’s more than one person wanting the same one, I’ll do a random drawing type thing again. The apps: 1password, Cha-Ching, iStopMotion, Awaken, and...

OpenID Mini-Rant
The blogosphere is all frothing over Blogger and Yahoo jumping on the OpenID bandwagon. This is a nifty concept (and it’s quite useful for stitching together the multiple Basecamps I’m involved in), but do people really think that anyone other than geeks and power web users will ever latch on to this?

Yo Google Maps, Gimme a Spot?
Here’s one more feature on the form I mentioned the other day. While not mandatory, having the user enter a restaurant’s street address with their submission helps maintain a more precise set of mapping coordinates. Most people surely won’t know this bit of information, but they could mostly likely name the city. Initially, the user sees a big message next to the form: ...

I don’t really have much interest in playing games any more, but I love seeing how they are built. I’m a sucker for just about any “behind the scenes” or “making of” production. I can’t even begin to comprehend the complexity of the new CryEngine that powers Crysis.

Flickr Photo Selection Control
I haven’t posted anything I’ve been working on for a while, so here’s a little UI piece from a soon-to-be-launched site. There’s a form users can fill out to submit a photograph to the site - they can either choose a photo from their computer or from their Flickr account (if they’ve entered their screen name). If they click the “Choose a Flickr...

Math Weenies Take on Vegas
I just started reading Rigged by Ben Mezrich - the true(*) story of a Harvard kid who gets caught up in some crazy games at the New York Mercantile Exchange (aka. “The Merc”). Drugs, alcohol, testosterone, and incomprehensible amounts of cash flow like water. Anyhow, reading this new book reminded me of reading Mezrich’s previous hit, Busting Vegas. In that roller coaster...
